Protective Films Used on Mobelkant Edgebands

At Mobelkant, protective films are applied to certain special surface edgebands in order to prevent scratches and surface damage during the edgebanding process. This application is particularly important for preserving product quality on sensitive surfaces.
The products on which we apply protective film can be divided into two main groups.
1. High Gloss Products
For High Gloss edgebands, we use a fully transparent protective film of Japanese origin to preserve the gloss and aesthetic appearance of the surface.
A blue transparent version of the same film is also available in our stock. In some markets, blue film is preferred instead of transparent film. However, this is not due to a technical requirement but rather a market perception created after past quality problems where the protective film was incorrectly blamed. In many cases the issue was related to application conditions or other factors rather than the edgeband itself.
For this reason, upon request we can supply both clear and blue transparent protective film options.
2. Transfer Foil Products
Our second product group consists of transfer foil edgebands. These products are commonly known in the market as Gold Mirror or Chrome Mirror.
For these products we use a Turkish static protective film.
The most important feature of static films is that they contain no adhesive. Therefore the common risk seen in adhesive protective films is eliminated:
The adhesive of the protective film penetrating the lacquer layer and removing the surface coating together with the paint when the film is peeled off.
When static film is used, this risk does not exist.
However, static films also have a disadvantage. During the edgebanding process they may separate easily from the surface, which may create operational issues in the machine. For this reason some customers prefer adhesive protective films instead.

Use of Adhesive Film on Transfer Foil Products
Customers may also request the Japanese adhesive protective film used on High Gloss products for transfer foil edgebands. However, in this case we highlight two important points.
- Long-term storage
If the products are stored for more than two years, the adhesive inside the protective film may bond with the transfer foil layer and cause the surface to peel off together with the film when removed.
For this reason we cannot provide a guarantee for storage periods exceeding two years.
- High temperature and sunlight
Exposure to high temperatures or direct sunlight may also cause the adhesive of the protective film to transfer to the surface.
Therefore the products should be stored:
- away from direct sunlight
- protected from excessive heat
- under proper storage conditions
Otherwise, when removing the protective film, the adhesive may attach to the transfer foil surface and cause the top layer to peel off together with the film.

Conclusion
Transfer foil edgebands (such as Gold Mirror or Chrome Mirror) have extremely sensitive surfaces. Therefore selecting the correct protective film and ensuring proper storage conditions are critical for product performance.
At Mobelkant, we offer our customers both static and adhesive protective film options depending on application requirements, while also providing the necessary technical information to ensure long-lasting and trouble-free use of our products.
